We Love You Miss Hannigan!

This morning the kids were rather quiet before they all "officially woke up" (that is to say, before they all started stirring, saying good morning, etc.)

I decided it was best to go investigate... I found all three kidlets piled in Adam's bed with stacks of books reading. It was really sweet. For fun, I poked my nose around the corner and said something like, "Fun? We're having FUN at our house? We can't have fun and get along at our house! What are you doing?!"

Without missing a beat, Liana wrinkled her nose and shouted, "We love you Miss Hannigan!"

(If you haven't seen "Annie" for a while, you'll miss the humor, but trust me, it was pretty funny!)

LOL! That's the beauty of homeschooling, Sis! They don't have to worry about a bus or the weather to be able to do their school work. *feeling a bit more like Miss Hannigan here!* (Actually, they often beg me to pull out their school books even on Saturdays. Not the work books/math, but the history/science/read-alouds are Fun books, not just "school" books. :O)

I had planned that the kids would get a week off over Thanksgiving, but I only gave them Wednesday, Thursday and Friday off... We're now about four weeks ahead... I had also planned two weeks off for Christmas, but things get a bit wild when we don't stick to our schedule. Everyone just stays a bit happier. I was just explaining to a friend how when I take several days off and then try to get back into the saddle with everyone, we have Major Cranks around here. Suddenly, Mr. Adam shakes himself awake and starts pushing my hot buttons again, remembering that he is "supposed to" do so, instead of being lulled by the daily routine's smoothness. The first few days back into the routine, he Drives Me Crazy, insisting that he's never seen words like "put," "mama" or "the." He remembers to try to resume control of his life, and will pull every fray of control he can. "Mama might make me sit here, but she can't control what comes out of my mouth. It's SOOOO hard to write into words what happens. Just trust me, it's just best to stick as close to the routine as possible. It's for everyone's sanity, believe me! :O)

You'll be relieved to know that all three kiddos have been sledding today. Another beauty of homeschooling is that it doesn't take as long to do as "regular" school - so, they just finished their work fast today, and headed for the hills! :O)

Shelly, I was researching Ukrainian adoption a year or more ago and came across this site, I check in here fairly frequently, but have never left any comments, but I had to this time!

First I'd like to say you guys have done a WONDERFUL job with your children! I have kept reading because it is so refreshing to hear about older child adoptions turning out to really resemble "NORMAL FAMILY LIFE"--does that make sense. You hear so much about parents adopting kids and having them "re-placed" because they don't meet the parent's expectations or whatever. You guys have had your share of hard stuff, I realize, but you've dealt with it in such an amazingly normal family kind of way. Does that even make sense?

Secondly, I'd like to say that for your daughter to have come up with that so quickly, she is one clever girl! She has a bright, quick wit.

You guys are great and I love reading your blog!

Nice to meet you, Lori! Thanks for finally saying, "Hello!"

I know there are plenty of other families who have a gazillion more problems than we do, and I do consider us blessed, blessed, blessed. (That's 3x since we have three!) *grin*

Are you adopting too? From where? Who? How many? How old? Best wishes with whatever your plans are!

Shelly,

We actually have been foster parents for about 10 years, and this past June we adopted a sibling group of 3 who had been placed with us since 2 years ago. We also have 3 other children.

My kid's ages are 9,8,7,6,4,and 3. They are all boys except for the 4 year old. We also homeschool, which I love!

We also had school the other day when the local public school had a snow day. I don't know if that will help your case with your sister or not--buy you aren't the only one who treasures routine!

It makes me so happy when you talk about how much you love being a mommy because I can SO relate. We had a difficult time "getting started" so to speak. I think that makes it all the more precious now that we are 8.

Anyway, I didn't mean to write a book, it just occurred to me that I feel like I "know" you after reading your blog for so long, so I thought I should introduce myself.

God bless and have a great Christmas!

Lori, HOW COOL ARE YOU?????????

You're my new hero! lol! Five BOYS! Whew, are you a busy mama! lol! I've been reading a blog of a mom of soon-to-be 13 kids, and boy, have I learned a lot about organizing, routines, meal-planning, etc. I think a big family atmosphere is just plain wonderful! It instantly conjures up the smell of fresh bread and the thoughts of many long-lost legos forgotten in the corners. Of course, I have that perspective having been raised as basically an only child (my six older siblings were grown and married by the time I was school-aged). So, perhaps I've worn those rose-colored glasses too long, but I just think kiddos are little blessings, and the more the merrier.

Some day, I'd love to adopt again, but this isn't the season for that... John's job needs to turn miraculously more "profitable" if you know what I mean! I'd love another sibling set from some other far-flung country. Probably not Ukraine again, but maybe Ethiopia or Liberia. Who knows what our family history will turn out like. But my hat is off to you, Lori! You've got your hands full, your lap over-flowing, and the far recesses of your home filled with giggles, and probably so many toys and games that you have no idea where to put everything. Just the way a family should run! :O) Plus you homeschool! Yup, definitely my hero! :O)

(And thanks for the extra input about having school on a "snow day!" I need all the help I can git!) My big sis can be rather scary sometimes! lol! (Love you, Sharon!) :O)

Thanks again for introducing yourself! It's really nice to meet a new friend!

"many long-lost legos forgotten in the corners" and "so many toys and games that you have no idea where to put everything".

Okay--have you already been to my house???? 'Cause you are right on! This year I'm definitely taking FlyLady's advice about clutter free gifts for my crew! We'll see how that goes over.

Seriously, though, I'd love directions to the blog of the mom of soon-to-be 13. Goodness knows I need all the help I can get!

Thanks.

By the way, I tried the FlyLady too! Only, I'm a flunk out! I'm definitely not "dressed to the shoes" every day, and my sink does NOT shine! *sigh* But, I've just been starting in one corner of my life and working out from there. The biggest overhaul so far is in the kitchen. Meal-planning/grocery shopping/trying new things/cooking from scratch have been the most difficult for me to stay disciplined, so I've been really trying to do better in that department. I'll tackle "dusting" next year. *cough-cough*

Cheers!
